4 out of 5 stars With a few tweaks this laptop could be great   June 13, 2010

I bought this laptop after a lot of research to replace a failing Toshiba and as a possible desktop replacement.

It took me a little while to appreciate the extra processing power as I had also installed Office 2007 (I'd previously used 2003, and assume that 2007 needs a bit more oomph to make it go!).

Upgrading the memory from 3GB to 4GB (cost £80 for a pair of identical 2GB sticks from Crucial) was the best thing I could possibly have done. Applications are launching in half the time, especially movies in iTunes. Audio and video play much more smoothly. It's a shame Acer don't supply the machine with paired memory.

One of my favourite features is the switch to disable the touchpad, which is a boon when typing large bodies of text. Otherwise one tends to brush the touchpad by accident and insert text all over the place!

For those of you who have your files on a NAS box, Windows 7 has a similar problem to Vista with extremely slow transfers when accessing wirelessly. After a lot of surfing, I came across a very elegant solution online - slightly reducing the MTU of the laptop's wireless connection. It's a shame it's taken 3 months to find it, as the transformation is incredible. My wife has stopped cursing now!!

Plus points:
Enormous, clear screen
Great audio
Big keyboard with numeric pad
Windows 7 startup/shutdown speed
Included games and MS Works

Minus points:
RAM should be 4GB - make it the first thing you buy. You'll get some money back by selling the 3GB that came with it.
Windows 7 doesn't do wireless "properly" out of the box.
Wireless range very poor, especially N.

5 out of 5 stars My Faith is restored in Laptops   May 8, 2010

I purchased this laptop for my daughter - fearing the worse as she has had XP before and her brother has Vista (which she does not like).

The installation went very well - quicker than previous PCs

The system runs fine - this is the first Laptop I have used that gives close to "Standard Desk top" performance and is the first Laptop that I may tempt me as a replacement for my ageing desktop PC.

The screen is good - DVD video play-back good including sound quality.

Webcam gives best picture I have seen from a webcam.

I have created the recovery disks without issue.

I can't really fault it.

Overall, very good value for money.

4 out of 5 stars Value for money   April 20, 2010

Value for money is how I'd describe this laptop. I was looking for a middle-end lappy for my parents and this one met almost all of the expectations.

17 inch monitor, built-in webcam and micro phone, decent processor, processing speed and RAM, HDMI output, SD card reader and Windows 7 - so it's got all the basics on it.

The 17 inch might look bulky but it's great to watch movies on - it's been a month since I bought it and it's been good till now, will write an updated review (if required) later.

5 out of 5 stars Good Buy   March 11, 2010

Recommended by a friend as having everything I needed on it. The larger screen is really good and makes for a classy looking Notebook. With its built in web-cam, 3.5 hours battery life and Windows 7, this has proved an excellent buy.

4 out of 5 stars Reasonable machine for the money.   March 1, 2010

I purchased this machine mainly for web browsing and Microsoft Office rather than gaming and graphics intensive activities (from what I've read something with a dedicated graphics memory etc may would be better if that's your thing).
It's performance so far appears to be fine, and the screen and it's general appearance appear to be pretty good as well.
I was expecting this to be more of a budget model, and the general build quality seems average (if you're in an environment where's there's potential for a few knocks from time to time then you may want to look for something more sturdy).
My real main gripe is that you have to create (with the aid of the Acer provided software) your own factory settings recovery DVDs as there are no disks provided with the machine. In my opinion there was also an inadequate level of notice telling people of the importance of creating them ASAP. I hate stating the obvious but this could really catch out the first time buyers or inexperienced people and could be costly in time and whatever else if a recovery were needed. -I can think of better ways for manufacturers to save money if that was the intention.
Overall though I'm happy with what I got, but if you're more fussy then you may want to spend a bit more for the extra quality (and recovery disks!)
