2 out of 5 stars I'm so disappointed with what could have been a good product   September 1, 2010

As a user of Microsoft Money for the past 19 years I have been looking for a replacement product as a direct result of Microsoft's decision to no longer develop or support Money.

Accountz works somewhat differently to MS Money but I was prepared to give it a go.

The first thing I noticed is that it seems to treat each 'category' of a payment (eg Petrol, Food, Clothing) as a mini Account in its own right. It took me a while to figure out what was going on here, as I logically expect each payment to belong to a specific account, and for each payment to be assigned a category of payment. I noticed that it didn't offer to create these on-the-fly either, it just deleted my typed entry until I had created it.

Part of the reason it took me a while to figure out how it all worked is that the supplied documentation is poor. The online documentation, whilst well laid out is lacking in depth and pedestrian in pace as they provide videos of the many processes. They need narrating by a professional with the speed of the video improved if they are going to keep my attention.

There's no doubting that there are many features in Accountz waiting to be discovered (such as the simple CTRL-N to create a new transaction). It's just a pity that I could not find an easy way of discovering these when I needed them.

I'm sorry to say the Accountz interface looked a bit clunky and far less polished than even the 5 year old Money product I'm hoping to migrate from. Talking of migration, this is where the trouble started. I had to export my Money file, one account at a time (not Accountz' fault, it's the way QIF files work). Then I tried to import an account's worth (one QIF file) of information into Accountz. It presented me with a 12 page screen where I had to map the categories from the old system to the new system. I could either drag and drop a category from Accountz to the imported information or vice-versa. This would have taken me days to do - all I needed at this point was a "Create a category for each imported category" button - but no such luck.

I was determined not to give up as I could see the potential of Accountz but after an hour of tedious drag-and-dropping with just a couple of pages worth completed I looked at the Microsoft web site to see whether they offered any better export tools as I had another 12 files to import.

Which is when I discovered that Microsoft have made their final version of Money available free of charge. Even though it won't convert my original (old) Money file it does import the QIF export files (that I had to make anyway for Accountz) without any intervention from me at all. Take note, Accountz!

In summary, I can see that for new users this could be a valuable product, given the self-discipline required to use it regularly. For users with an existing product the import routine is so laborious that it proved a show-stopper for me.

The final nail in the coffin was the availability of a superior, free product from Microsoft that should see me through the next few years.

3 out of 5 stars It was too complicated for me.....   August 28, 2010

When I heard that Microsoft were no longer updating Money versions I understood (wrongly as it happens)that it would not work using 64 bit Windows 7.
I thought this accounts package would be ideal as I could import my 15 years worth of Microsoft Money Data into it.
It is true that this can be done but having built up over the years about 30 accounts of interlinked current accounts, deposit accounts, credit card accounts, savings products and investments as well as share portfolios it has proved almost impossible.
You need to create a holding folder and export out each account into it and then rename and import it into Home Accountz. Each account generates numerous fields which then have to be individually mapped. I could see that this was going to take me into about 900 separate actions and confirmations.
I tried it for a few hours and it quickly became too complicated, not at all recognisable compared to Microsoft Money so I abandoned the whole setup and uninstalled it.
I have given it 3 stars as I am sure starting from scratch with new accounts and no data apart from a starting balance it would do the job.
Having had an Income Tax Investigation and dispute with the Inland Revenue I used Microsoft Money to go back 5 years. I produced detailed income category reports which got me through it painlessly and my demand actually become a credit. I dare not put the same trust in this package.
For the moment Microsoft Money is still doing the job well.

4 out of 5 stars Good quality product   August 25, 2010

Having recently discovered that my MS Money no longer works and that you can't buy a replacement I looked around for an alternative UK based product and found Home Accountz. It is different to MS Money and takes a little while to get used to but I now find it easy to use and have successfully transferred to it. The guides you can access online are easy to follow and have answered all the queries I had.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant program   August 20, 2010

This program is brilliant, after using several different home accounts programs this is by far the easiest to get to grips with and use. Other rival programs I have tried just doesn't compare, too many usability issues whereas Home Accountz was easy and straightforward and did everything I wanted and more! I also found the sales team really helpful and polite. Which in this day and age makes such a difference! Thankyou Home Accountz for such a great product!

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing   August 20, 2010

Having recently purchased a MAC I had to make a change from my trusty old MS Money. Although I had read numerous reviews of "Home Accountz" I am afraid that I have to disagree with the majority of those reviews. I have been extremely disappointed with this product. It is quite limited as far as I am concerned and is nowhere as user friendly as MS Money. On the fourth day of using the programme I discovered that all the data I had entered on last use had disappeared. I contacted the help line and the adviser was very helpful. He explained that they were aware that some computers sometimes failed to automatically back up work on exit. He then told me that I would be sent a "patch" within the next 24hrs. The patch was duly sent and the programme now seems to be OK. Would I buy this product knowing what I now know - a most definite "NO".
