By far the best - believe me I know! August 17, 2010 N. Friend (London, England) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Ok - so firstly I will explain that I know a LOT about these kinds of remotes as I have owned and spent DAYS setting up Philips Pronto remotes as well as many others. I am actually a programmer myself and I found other remotes difficult. When I bought this (for my mother) I thought that it might not be great but as it turned out it was smart looking, VERY ergonomic (I mean you could sit with it in your hand for hours before you even realised that it was there) and so so easy to set up.
The setup:
You install the CD and make an account (this is so that you don't loose your settings if you loose your remote or upgrade - nice!) and then select what AV equipment you have. It has options for EVERYTHING (including projectors which is a big plus for us) and then it asks for the brands. It has ALL of them! You then tell it the model and it recognises them. After that it asks what 'actions' you use; 'watch tv' for example. Now that is very usefull for my mother because she can't stand remotes and the idea that you have to turn on a DVD player as well as a TV is ... well a bit too much! But the main point to stress here is that it knows what equipment you have and it knows all the options (like what your HI-FI is tuned to to play a CD - it even gives all the options that your HI-FI has because it knows all the info about your model). No all I can say is that my mother could have done it herself.
Using and living with it:
It sits in it's own little charging station which is great and it even comes with a little cloth to remove grease etc. - so it is always easy to find and has a place and looks smart!
It turns on all of our devices easily and quickly and for my mother's benefit it has the 'assistant' which asks if everything is working correctly (this can be disabled if you want). It goes through diagnostics if something isn't working e.g. "Is the DVD on?" and then gives you advice on how to make it all work. My mother finds this fantastic.
Conclusion:
This is the best value programmable remote control - not because of the price (which is very reasonable compared to the alternatives) but because of the ease of use and setup. Having hard buttons for example is just great and I really cannot describe the way it fits into your hand!
If there were seven stars I would give it seven! Genuinely my best purchase.
Beautiful piece of kit August 16, 2010 Charlotte Davis Works seamlessly with everything I point it at. Have not managed to interface it with the boyfriend though, even trying to dock it with him results in less-than-ideal behaviour. Perhaps this will be rectified in a future software release.
Outstanding August 9, 2010 L. Bramley (Europe) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is an exceptional piece of kit.
(We live in Madeira and ordered it to control our mix of UK imported and locally purchased equipment. It took 20 days to arrive due to Amazon using cheaper shipping rather than air freight but saved us around 100 pounds over the local price. Amazon prices are around half the locally available on most electrical and equipment and recorded media, we saved 420 pounds on a Kenwood Titanium mixer for example and get Blu Ray Titles for as low as one third of the local prices.)
Download the Logitech Harmony One manual from their site and read up on just what this remote can do. It gets to grips with high end specification AV amplifiers and everything else we have thrown at it. It lights up when you pick it up, can be controlled with one hand and is stylish and well built compared to other remotes.
We have stored seven remotes that had to be pulled out and used on a regular basis, we previously had to watch or listen with a combination of three at our disposal.
We have total control over equipment with the remotes screens in the order we want to use them in. The computer link to the Logitech data base is innovative and works incredibly well. Purchase this remote and you are linking into a very sophisticated system.
The initial set up took just two hours to get a usable, reliable control system working but since then the fun has been in customising the buttons and screen layouts to reflect our own needs and make the interface as intuitive as possible.
If something on the Logitech database is not quite correct then it is easy to correct the information on the remote using the usb link and downloaded software.
Great fun, great product and a satisfying experience.
Beware when taking it out of the packaging, everything can and does fall out if the box is opened as it should be.
This will not control bluetooth devices such a a Wii. or RF controlled switching devices such a remotely switched wall sockets.
This will not control radio frequency controlled Bang & Olufson TV's, Beosystems or Beolinks but as these are not in the main viewing lounge, this is not a problem for us.
Great remote, but the software sucks! August 4, 2010 Michael Doyle (England) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
The remote itself is great, as is Amazon's price and service, and when you have been through the pain of setting it up it's well worth the effort.
But I have to knock two stars off because the software is such a pain to use.
With a device like this, the software is an essential part of using it, and my experience with the software has been frustrating. Some examples:
Yesterday the software reported that my internet connection or firewall was causing it to be unable to connect. After extended troubleshooting, I found it was simply because the Logitech server was down for maintenance. Why didn't the software just say that it couldn't reach the server instead of sending me troubleshooting my own connection?
This morning I was using it OK. Now it has logged me out and tells me that my username / password are incorrect.
Navigating the sofware is awkward - you stumble across different settings, but the menu structure is so poor that trying to get back to them is a real challenge.
As a previous reviewer has said, just making one minor change to any of the settings results in a five minute download to the remote. This is makes it very time consuming to make little one-step tweaks to the programming.
The remote itself is a joy to use, and if Logitech were to overhaul the software I would give it an unreserved five stars.
Fantastic gadget - if you're willing to wade through the setup July 22, 2010 Mark P. (British Isles) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
As others have said, the setup is a bit fiddly - particularly so if you have non-standard equipment (trying to get it to control a HTPC running MythTV was a bit of a challenge). Once you've got the hang of it though, it's pretty easy to add and remove devices, change the activities (groups of devices that are all controlled together - e.g. "Watch DVD" may do the following: TV on, set to the correct input, amplifier on, set to the correct input, DVD player on) etc.
The one thing that nobody else has mentioned (that I could see) is the "Help" feature on the remote. If, for example, you hit the "Watch DVD" activity (described above) but you're not pointing the remote in the correct direction, then perhaps your amplifier doesn't switch on. Press "Help" and the remote will prompt you whether the TV is on (yes), whether the amplifier is on (no) - and then it will re-send the appropriate signal to switch the amplifier on. It then asks if the problem has been resolved - if not, you can carry on stepping through all the options in the activity. Clever stuff, and very helpful if your family aren't the kind of people who can't/won't work out why the DVD isn't playing properly!
In summary, this was a fantastic purchase - a steep initial outlay, yes, but ultimately very rewarding... particularly with the huge reduction in clutter and remote-confusion.
