Story
Alex Mercer was once a scientist for the prominent medical research corporation, Gentek, but one day he wakes up to find himself a shape-shifter with absolute mastery over his genetic structure, but no memory of how this came to be. Taking to the streets of New York City in search of answers, he quickly encounters a web of lies and vows to rip the truth from those who have hidden it from him and the world.

A few other things that Alex also learns quickly is that he is not alone in possessing amazing abilities, that there is a secret war brewing in New York City and he is on its front lines. A deadly infection has spilled out of control and the government has seized the media to stop the spread of information and has placed New York under quarantine as martial law is instated; igniting a firestorm of combat, carnage and death. As he roams the city, he faces an ever growing army of infected creatures warped and changed by the virus. As it spreads, the virus overwrites the genetics of those it infects, warping and changing their form into something else, something that seems to have been planned. The answers he seeks appear to be tied to the virus, so he rushes to discover the truth behind it, but standing against him and his goal is Project Blackwatch. An elite army specialist force, they are tasked with halting the spread of the virus at any cost and are eager to bring Alex in dead or alive to determine his connection to it. It would seem that they are potentially both enemy and ally to Alex's cause. Will Alex assist Blackwatch in its hunt, or join forces with the virus and subjugate humanity, pushing his powers to the limit as the genetic shackles of humanity fall by the wayside? That choice is up to the player in Prototype.

Gameplay
In Prototype players engage in 'Deceive or Destroy' gameplay. This allows gamers the choice to either blend in with the population and covertly progress through the story, or fully unleash Alex’s powers, and move through New York City like a walking slaughterhouse, taking control of military vehicles, and causing destruction at every turn.

Although Alex is literally strong enough to fling people and large objects around easily, his most intriguing power is his ability to 'consume' people. In doing this he acquires their memories, abilities, and their appearance. New memories help him to solve the mystery of how he got the way he is, while new appearances allow him to shape-shift into new useful forms at will and abilities allow him to manoeuvre in parts of the game requiring specific skills in specific situations. In addition, Alex's consumption of people also facilitates his ability to transform his physical body and manipulate his senses. Most weapons acquired in this way are outgrowths from his appendages like exaggerated blades, shields, whips and claws used for brutal close combat, but consumption also allows for powerful abilities like thermal vision, which provides for vision through smoke and obstacles, as well as 'infected vision' with which Alex can detect hotspots of viral infection throughout the city.

Key Features:

  • Fast and Deadly Combat - Shape-shift your body to the situation at hand ... from claws to blades to hammers to whips, as you choose the right weapon for the situation. Change to shield or armour for defence or use advanced sensory powers (thermal vision, infected vision) to track your enemies.
  • Over-the-top Locomotion - Seamlessly and fluidly bound from building to building, run up walls, bounce off cars and everything in your path. Adaptive parkour lets you move freely through the open-world environments of New York City.
  • Unique Disguising Abilities - Consume anyone at anytime, take on their appearance and assume their memories and special abilities.
  • Deep Conspiracy Driven Storyline - Wake up with no memory of the past ... just mysterious powers and a link to a town in Idaho. Delve into the mysteries of your origin, the true nature of your power and your part in a conspiracy 40 years in the making.
  • Parkour Inspired In-game Movement - Alex Mercer's movements are inspired by Parkour, a mostly urban activity bordering on both art and martial arts that aims at moving the human body from one point to another as smoothly, efficiently and quickly as possible. Recent examples of it gained worldwide attention in chase scenes in the 2007 film "Casino Royale."
  • Xbox LIVE Achievements - Collect a wealth of Xbox LIVE achievements and build your gamer score as you play.

4 out of 5 stars Anyone for Carnage?   March 8, 2010
Dario McGeachy (Exeter, England)
Sweet. Jesus. How to describe a game where you can kill an old lady, eat her, take on her identity, run up the nearest skyscraper and then elbow drop off the top on to the horrified and confused onlookers below? Sound fun? Cause that's only the beginning of the carnage in probably the most over the top insane game i have ever had the joy to play.
Are you the kind of person who, when playing GTA, treats the missions as kind of a side project, preferring mindless destruction instead? Well this is a bit like that, on steroids, in the middle of an apocalypse, and you've got super powers, and a bats**t mental moral compass. In short. Amazing.
Of course all this would count for nothing if the game itself was crap. But it's not.
The game looks good. The story is fine. The controls don't get in the way and the sub-missions are satisfying and challenging. The game is more than proficient in all these area's without really excelling but then again, when you can throw cars at helicopters who really cares.
If this sounds like your kind of thing then buy it. Buy it now and you will be happily bathed in blood and showered in scattered limbs for weeks to come. Lovely

4 out of 5 stars literally a killer game..   February 22, 2010

This game is amazing.. that should be enough description really.
The game follows the life of Alex Mercer. a man with no memory of his life but instead god like powers. He wakes up in a morgue and kills his way to the truth about how he got there. On the way amassing powers that start with super strength to wolverine blades to a wicked Scythe arm. Run up walls, glide, hijack military vehicle, consume any living organism. And then theres the devastator attacks hes got. just youtube it. watch him burst out in a cloud of angry spikes that kills most everything around him.
Theres the main storyline and side games (events) where you have to achieve medals. took me 20 hrs just to go through the story mode because of it as i was gunning for the event EPs.

40 achievements on xBox 360.
No online-play mode.
No addons yet.

A real entertainer but once you put in 60 odd hours (like me) it gets pretty repetitive. Massive amounts of blood and gore

4 out of 5 stars Good - Not a classic though   February 19, 2010

I've had this game since it's release and have now decided to write a little review about it, well this game has a whole "Marmite Effect" printed all over it, I found some of the reviews stupid and skewed - as well as biased towards Infamous(Yes the dude that is afraid of the rain for half the game).

Alright, the main aspect of the game is the chaos that is found on the game,

Picture this, there you are minding your own business, consuming random people and what not, out of nowhere bustle out a group of what seemed to be naked furless werewolf-like creatures, followed by millitary personnel armed with Grenade launchers, Assault Rifles, Rocket launchers, LMG's. Down the street roll a couple of tanks, heading straight for you.

So there you are, trapped in the middle of all that chaos, now, picture yourself having hardcore shell armour, as well as large array of bio-integrated weaponary, to name a few - Heavy knuckles that make you look like a Orangutan dragging his knuckles or maybe a whip that can clear the whole street with a whip lash. You just jump into the fray and start killing stuff, that's what I do. It's just pure fun that way, unless you don't like that sort of thing and would much prefer attempting to get away from those pesky rain clouds.

Ok, quick sum up;

Graphics 6/10 Not the most impressive I have seen and I was rather dissapointed at first, but got used to them as the game carried on and forgave the lack of amazing graphics.

Gameplay 9/10 Always fun to have a random slaughter reminiscent of that of the usual GTA IV massacre. The story also allows you to start over again with ALL your upgrades on the same difficulty, so if you have finished the story on EASY, next time you do the story on EASY, you will have ALL the upgrades that you have unlocked on the last game you have played.

Combat 9/10 There is large variation of different combat techniques that you can use, there are weapons and vehicles to use as well as stealth tactics etc etc, I found the hand to hand combat to be most fun and the guns used by humans as the most effective weaponary on the game.

Longivity 8/10 I have finished the game in about 10-15 hours(Somewhere in that timeframe), I've rushed the story and could have taken longer to explore the city and randomly take out humans and infected alike.

---------------

Marmite effect, do not purchase if you find yourself nodding to any of those:

I don't like Chaotic Games.

I preffer good graphics over fun gameplay.

Gamerscore is improtant to me.

I like to be a good character.(Whether you like it or not, you WILL kill a civillian)

I love infected zombie like creatures and would hate having to kill them/

I much preffer dodging the rain clouds rather than 2 attack helicopters.

Just a few things that might turn you off this game.
