3 out of 5 stars Hit and Miss   July 26, 2010
Stanislav "NotStan" (Rickmansworth, UK)
I wanted to like this game, believe me I did. But it was so flawed if I had the worst taste in games I would have hated this. The whole concept of survival was amazing and I thought that the bullets used as currency, gas mask etc was a nice concept to the game, centering around survival in a post apocalyptic environment. What was severely flawed though was the fact that it took about half a clip of the said bullets, which are extremely rare, to kill a simple mutant, yes a simple mutant it's not even anything super duper it's just a naked dog that took me half a clip in the head to kill. Now I am not sure whether the "dirty" rounds were designed like that and military is a lot stronger or the hit detection is extremely poor. I am going to go with the hit detection as it usually takes about 2-3 headshots on average to kill a beast in any good FPS game, or even one, in this it took me about.. 15.

The graphics are not my sole concern, and they were pretty crisp but to me it seemed like character design was flawed and a piece such as an armour kit stuck out of place or in case of monsters limbs were protruding weirdly out of a body when slayed. As I have said, the game concept was amazing but the execution on developers behalf was poor, it could have been so much more but yet it turned out even less than an average shooter for me, what kind of a shooter has hit detection such as that?

Overall I would give this game a hearty 5/10 and would still suggest that you at least rent it to see whether you agree with my opinion or not, I do have a picky choice of games so it would be selfish of me to assume that everyone shares my opinion.

Metro 2033 as i said is an absolute masterpiece.
The way it combines Genres like Shooter, action, horror and survival
makes that little more amazing.
And i just love the look and presentation as well even the feel of it
is amazing.
So I strongly reccomend Metro 2033 or else.

2 out of 5 stars Great Premise, Flawed Game   July 15, 2010

Reminds me a little of Hellgate London in concept in that during an apocalypse investing in your local underground railway will pay off later and parts of STALKER with strange creatures following a nuclear disaster. When the game isn't holding your hand with little railroaded sections it becomes hard to navigate and combined with often unclear goals increases the frustration factor that eventually drove me to doing something else as the "rewards" of playing the game weren't worth the bad level design.

4 out of 5 stars metro   June 7, 2010

I actually thought this might be a little like fallout 3 but was pleasantly surprised to find a pretty good storyline underneath the gameplay. The graphics are pretty good and convey the dark confined spaces of some of the tunnels really well. It really makes you feel like your underground. The enemies are pretty tough and ammo can sometimes be a little limited but as long as you search everywhere you shouldnt have any problems. The only problem which was a little annoying was if you die you have to start back at the checkpoint which can be at the beginning of the level. It could have done with the ability to save your game in the middle of a chapter but this is only a small problem. Overall the game is really good with an original storyline.

3 out of 5 stars Only for some   June 6, 2010

>>There have been many additions to the horror apocalypse games over the years, the Fear games being some of the most popular. This game happens to be based on a book and so is less imaginative and is of course more scripted. But is this a good thing? Well no not really, the game feels to scripted sometimes and does carry the aspect of being a game to far away to make it constantly enjoyable. The idea is very good, but it would have been better to have seen the idea of the book taken but not completely based on it. It would have been good to have been given a map of the tunnels when you first enter them and have to decide your own route rather than having one planned out. Instead of a map though you have a compass, used for navagating round markets and in some cases, back to your friends. Along with your compass comes a journal which lists your objectives. Now you don't pause the game to view these thing, you have to press the Back button to bring up the compass combined journal in one hand and a lighter in the other. Press the right trigger and the objectives come into view press the left and the lighter is switched on. A great idea, but if only it needed to be used more often. The flame of the lighter is very well animated and does appear to actually be a real flame. Other animations though are very slick and god but sometimes look unfinished. Peoples faces can be a bit dull and out of sink with the voices sometimes and appear to show no expressions. Some textures are a bit unfinished aswell but this hardly makes much difference to the gameplay. It is easy to say though that the monsters aren't as creepy as could be. The graphics aren't bad on them, but it is hard to distinguish whats what on them. I couldn't work out where the eyes were on one creature, 'are they here, no there, maybe it doesn't have any!?'. And some breeds of monster all look the same. For instance there is no size difference in the rats which, after the nuclear explosion that first put man into the metro, I would have thought. The also all look the same with no differing colours or anything. Something that could've been picked up on but seems to have been left unfinshed.

>>It also seems that these creatures, and humans, can absorb bullets like a sponge! I used up two shotgun shots on one smaller creature and it was still after me, and i'm sure it wasn't my aim. Humans too seem to be able to take bullets like a juggernaut out of MW2 and considering that you have millitary bullets as currency, once you run out of the dirty ammunition you'll be firing money. And considering all of the people there are in one enemy camp and you can imagine how it must be for people who have trouble prying there finger off of the trigger. It wasn't a problem for me but for some it could prove fatal in those tunnels.
Another thing also seems to be that Aayron (The man you play as) can take a plenty bit of damage from te mutated creatures but not from people. I tdoesn't take much to down Aayron ina firefight with the enemy and considering how much damage they can take it is a bit annoying. But you don't always have to shoot your way through an enemy camps, you can sneak through but you'll have to bee as sneaky as something that hasn't been discovered yet, as being stealthy is almost impossible. You'll often attempt to sneeak through a camp but get discovered haf way through, meaning that the enemies that you didn't kill behind you will be coming in to, meaning you'll be cornered by them and the forces in front of you.
Snd that's another thing, the only way to kill people in camps silently is with a silenced gun that usually (somehow) leads to discovery, or a throwing knife which will also lead to discovery. Not many options here.

>>When going through the tunnels with a friend it is great to listen to them speaking to you, like you would in real life. It's just a shame that they aren't as good at shooting as they are at making conversation, and will often just stand there getting attacked by a mutated bat or something, leaving you in charge of taking down mutiple enemies.
But your not always below ground, sometimes you'll pop up to the surface to get from place to place, and it s in these moments that you have to where your gasmask all the time. The gasmask wasn't a bad idea, it was, again, just brought across wrong. You have to watch your filters so that you don't run out of air and also make sure that the mask itself doesn't smash, then you're dead. Some markets don't sell filters which is annoying and the one I found that did, I couldn't get any as I had been firing my money ammunition by mistake as it doesn't tell you which ammunition you ooad when holding RB. This lead to me running out of air over and over and over and over again untill I ignored all creatures and ran to where my friend was waiting. I found myself then running out of air as we were attcked by enemies. I did run out of air and was about to die when it went into a cutscene. Whew.

>>Markets are where the game truly shows off its graphics and capability. Each market is splendidly made with it's occupants taking a different look at you depending on what station you're at. You are, for instance, highly respected at your home station for being a truly great gunman, but at other stations peole treat you with no such respect. You can go around listening into peoples conversations although after a while they might say something to you. The markets do actually feel like markets and it is great to just wander around. It is just a shame that the rest of the game isn't as good as it could be.

>>The game isn't overly violent, but if a monster does attack to much it goes into a min quick time event in which you'll have to press a button alot to ghet your knife out and start sawing at the beasts mouth. It is in these QTE's that the game feels like it is trying to be a bloody, scary and gruesome game when it isn't, it only really scary. You might notice that the game is titled: Only for some, and when for me I would've given it 2 and a half stars soe people would like this game, so I gave it 3. It just isn't my game and i've tried to get across evenly the game without going against it, but i've been honest, and the game is, only for some.

I Love:
Markets feel alive
Gasmask was a good idea
Atmosphere
Dark tunnels are generally creepy
Banter
characters

I Hate:
Having bullets as currency
Gasmask is overdone
Shooting just isn't up to standards
some monsters are lacking in detail
Stealth is near impossible
All markets should sell what you need to survive

VERDICT:
A great idea that shouldn't have been wholly based on the book.

Graphics: Very good, although sometimes is lacking in features. 8.9
Sound: Good, not great but good 7.6
Atmosphere: very tense and well done, the atmosphere si one of the best points 9.6
